Hello!
こんにちは!
I just wanted to write a short blog to introduce myself to everyone at the National Institute of Technology, Akashi College. Many of you have already met me, but for those who have not, my name is Noora. I am completing a 2 week internship in Akashi for my university in Sydney, Australia (Macquarie University).
So, I will tell you a little bit about myself. I am from Finland, but I was born in Belgium and I lived there for 10 years. I went to a local school so I learned Flemish (which is pretty much the same as Dutch). After this I finished my elementary school and high school in Finland (I did spend 1 year going to school in the UK).
After I finished high school, I decided to take a gap year and not think about studying at university straight away. So, I decided to go live in Italy for 1 year and work as an au pair. An au pair is like a babysitter who lives with a host family. I ended up staying in Italy for almost a year and a half! I spoke no Italian before I moved there and ended up leaving Italy speaking the language fluently! (Although I have to admit that I my Italian is a little bit rusty now as I don't speak it that often anymore).
I enjoyed my time in Italy so much that I decided to keep traveling. I spent 3 months in the US - in New York and Connecticut. I absolutely loved it. New York is such an amazing city. After my time in the US, I applied for a working holiday visa in Australia and arrived in Sydney to work as an au pair for 6 months. During my year in Australia, I travelled around the country and because I wanted to stay longer I decided to work on a farm for 3 months in order to receive a second working holiday visa! This second visa allowed me to stay in Australia for another year.
So after almost 4 years of not studying, I decided I need to start thinking about my future. As I did not want to leave Australia yet, I started to look into going to university in Sydney. At first I thought it would be impossible to study in Sydney as the tuition fees were (and still are!) super high! However, luckily I was able to get some support from the Finnish government, which helps me pay for half of the yearly fees. The other half I have to come up with myself. So this means that while I am not studying or spending time with friends, I am working. While it has not been easy to start studying in Sydney, I am very happy that I decided to go for it! I have learned so much about myself and I have been able to work on my English language skills. And learn Japanese 😉.
If you have any questions about studying overseas or even just about travel or anything else, come and talk to me. You can usually find me at the Global Terrace every day. I am happy to talk about anything!
